Notes from the Chef, January 5, 2012: National Bird Day & a Fond Farewell

January 5th, 2012

Happy National Bird Day! In honor of our favorite birds, today’s menu items are all inspired by the birds we’ve come to know and love from Saturday Morning Cartoons- Foghorn Leghorn being a personal favorite. On a serious note, everyone at Gastronaut has loved cooking and serving your dinners these past months. We’ll miss you all and hope to see you around. Thanks for all of your support, praise and healthy appetites. Please follow @gastronaut to stay tuned to see what we come up with next!

Notes from the Chef, January 4, 2012: Simply Grilled

January 4th, 2012

Tonight’s dinner is a simply grilled menu full of savory tastes. For your entrée, feast on grilled tri-tip steak with grilled leek tapenade, or a turnover with grilled portabella mushrooms, zucchini, and red pepper. On the side, there’s a delicious potato gratin and grilled marinated cauliflower. The leek is one of the national emblems of Wales, and be found anywhere from ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian archeological sites to Shakespeare to holographic Japanese pop star Hatsune Miku. We hope you enjoy your dinner!

Notes from the Chef, January 3, 2012: The Rose Bowl

January 3rd, 2012

Last night the Oregon Ducks and Wisconsin Badgers battled for a combined 1,129 total yards in a wild back-and-forth shootout, with Oregon finally emerging with their first Rose Bowl victory in 95 years. We’re celebrating with a savory duck confit tossed with brandy-marinated apricots and cherries and vegetarian Smart Ground meatballs with spicy ketchup glaze. On the side, have a serving of Pasadena Pilaf and Chip Kelley’s Carrot Chips. We hope you enjoy!

Notes from the Chef, December 21, 2011: Winter’s Here!

December 21st, 2011

Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, so Gastronaut has made a warm delicious meal to keep away those winter chills! Have a comforting bowl of hearty beef stew with grass-fed, free-range beef, with a wild rice pilaf and steamed broccoli. Wild rice is actually a species of grass with edible seeds, native to China and North America. It’s high in protein and the amino acid lysine and low in fat. It is also a good source of certain minerals and B vitamins. Enjoy tonight’s dinner, and keep warm!
